ENGLISH LEVELS
Each level is equivalent to, approximately, 120 hours of classes, but we depend on the student studying out of class and having a good level of attendance.
 
BEGINNER
GRADE: 1-5
  • Student is still unable to use the language in any practical work situation.
  • Student is a true beginner.
ELEMENTARY
GRADE: 5-25
  • Student possesses a very basic knowledge of the language and is able to understand the general meaning of simple texts.
  • Student is unable to write in the language.
  • Student makes him or herself understood only in situations of extreme necessity.
  • Student understands single, random words and little more.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE
GRADE: 25-35

  • Student reads work-related documents with some difficulty.
  • Student needs assistance in writing simple texts.
  • Student makes his or herself understood in face-to-face conversations if the other person is patient and understanding.
  • Student will not use the telephone.
  • In face-to-face conversations, student understands if he or she knows the topic and the other person speaks slowly.
  • Student is not able to contribute in meetings.
  • Student cannot attend seminars, courses or conferences.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE
GRADE: 35-50

  • Student reads work-related documents without great difficulty.
  • Student writes simple texts but cannot write reports, except for the most routine.
  • Student can deal with their contacts face-to-face but with some difficulty; if extroverted, can contribute in routine meetings.
  • Student can settle specific, routine matters when abroad that are in his or her area of responsibility.
  • Student is not able to negotiate.
  • Student will not use the telephone except in cases of absolute necessity.
  • Student is able to understand face-to-face exchanges in routine meetings but has difficulty understanding in conferences, presentations and seminars.

INTERMEDIATE
GRADE: 50-65

  • Student can read and understand all work-related texts.
  • Student can write routine e-mails, but cannot efficiently form an argument in written form.
  • Student shouldn't have problems in face-to-face situations. Except for his or her own insecurity, student will fully contribute in routine meetings.
  • Student is not able to negotiate contracts and cannot contribute in high-level meetings concerning important or delicate topics.
  • Student has no excuse for not using the telephone.
  • Student can go abroad to settle matters in his or her area of responsibility.
  • Student is not able to follow in meetings with many native speakers, but will understand in seminars and presentations assisted by visual aids.

INTERMEDIATE
GRADE: 65-75

  • Student understands work-related texts perfectly, as well as other texts not using literary vocabulary.
  • Student can write e-mails and simple letters and reports, committing grammatical errors but successfully conveying the message.
  • Student deals with contacts face-to-face without problems; can negotiate but only if he or she has a good deal of self-confidence and an in-depth understanding of the issue at hand.
  • Student can do presentations if he or she prepares well.
  • Student can use the telephone without major difficulty.
  • Student can participate in any kind of meeting or ceremony unless the majority of the participants are native speakers.

ADVANCED
GRADE: 75-85

  • Student understands any type of text without problems. Any unusual vocabulary will not hinder his or her comprehension.
  • Student writes all types of routine texts, making grammatical and style mistakes only in the more important and complicated texts.
  • If the student is a resolute person, his or her lack of full command of the language will not be a hindrance in using it efficiently in all work situations.
  • Student understands in conversation without problems, except for native speakers who speak rapidly or with an unusual accent, and can hold his or her own in meetings with native speakers.
  • Student does not loose his or her language efficiency in telephone conversations.
  • Student is able to negotiate.

ADVANCED
GRADE: 85-95

  • Student understands all texts without problems, only stumbling on very advanced or elaborate vocabulary. This still does not hinder his or her full comprehension.
  • Student composes all types of texts, those on very important or delicate topics still giving him or her some difficulties.
  • If the student is a resolute person he or she will speak efficiently in all situations.
  • Student understands in conversation without problems, except for speakers who speak rapidly or with an unusual accent. Student can handle telephone conversations.
  • Student can negotiate even very important contracts.

ADVANCED
GRADE: 95-100

  • Student has an almost perfect command of the language.
  • A native speaker will not notice his or her command still isn't absolute.

Native-speaker level
GRADE: 100

  • Student has a perfect and complete command of the language.
